Why reminders support executive functioning

Notifications are external cues that reduce the need for memory and willpower. They help with:

  • Initiation: Nudges make it easier to start
  • Time awareness: Structured reminders support pacing and transitions
  • Cognitive offloading: Less to track in your head
  • Sensory clarity: Custom sounds help prioritize attention

How to get the most out of notifications

  • Keep Motivational reminders on for light encouragement
  • Pick sounds that stand out but won’t overwhelm you
  • Start small, if you get notification fatigue, just use one or two that truly help
  • Switch it up if reminders start feeling invisible, it’s okay to pause or reset them
